No Strings Attached performed decently at the box office, earning a little over $149 million against its $25 million production budget, but was hardly a romantic comedy mega-hit like My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Crazy Rich Asians. Critics had good things to say about Natalie Portman’s No Strings Attached performance and praised Ivan Reitman’s direction, who has previously dabbled in the romantic comedy genre with movies like Six Days, Seven Nights. Greta Gerwig and Mindy Kaling’s comic performances were praised too, but by and large, No Strings Attached received a pretty lukewarm reception.
Part of the problem was that a movie like No Strings Attached – almost identical in plot, in fact – came out a few months after the movie’s release. Friends With Benefits (which, funnily enough, was the working title of No Strings Attached after the original title was changed) starred Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as two young professionals trying to maintain a casual sexual relationship.
